Kids don't like vegetables...well...most kids. I don't know about you but I threw out more vegetables and fruit than my grandkids ever ate. To make matters worse my ice cubes tasted and smelled like some of my rotten vegetables and onions. I thought my refrigerator was somehow broken. So I started looking up refrigerator odors and discovered that my refrigerator works by recycling cold air from the freezer compartment to the refrigerator compartment.  Don't forget to show your kids how that works.

Odors that starts in the refrigerator section are cycled to the freezer section by a fan. The odors are encased in ice and released when melted. Much like ice in the glaciers trapping air and debris from thousands of years ago my ice was encasing all of my uncovered foods and moldy vegetables odors.  I couldn't understand why my iced drinks always tasted like my freshly diced onions.  My odor problem was nearly solved by putting everything that went into the refrigerator into ziplock bags or containers. But I still had a mold problem.

The vegetables and fruit I was buying were all going bad in a few days. Bananas, avocados, strawberries, grapes, lettuce were all going bad in a few days. Something in the vegetable industry was making produce deteriorate faster than ever. I don’t know what causes rapid rotting but if someone can let my know I would appreciate it.

So how to combat the rapid appearance of mold and fungus?  In my reading I stumbled on activated oxygen, also known as ozone, being used by commercial food packaging entities to kill existing germs and bacteria responsible for mold and rot before packaging. Apparently activated oxygen neutralizes bacteria, mold and other harmful microbes while oxygenating, cleaning and reinvigorating fruits and vegetables extending their life.

I found battery powered refrigerator ozone generators. I bought one and put it in my vegetable drawer. I was so pleased with the results I bought another one. My fruits and vegetables stayed fresh longer.  And no more odor!  I put one in the vegetable drawer and the other for the general refrigerator. My device cycles on and off for a few minutes every hour and the batteries last about 3 months.
